Read "Great Flood Forced Farmers West" in The Washington Post, December 3, 2007.Over 8,000 years ago the Laurentide Ice Sheet, which covered most of what are now Canada and the United States, collapsed. The flood of water into the oceans raised their level by 4.5 feet. The higher level of the Mediterranean breached a dam at what is now the Bosporus Strait, flooding 28,000 square miles over a few decades. When the waters rose, perhaps 100,000 people in southeast Europe -- who already practiced early farming -- migrated west across Europe, disseminating their culture widely.
