Howard Koh has been named by the Obama administration to be Assistant Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. He is leaving the posts of Associate Dean for Public Health Practice and Director of the Division of Public Health Practice at the Harvard School of Public Health.
Harold Koh is quoted as saying:
“Only in America can one generation be an ambassador to the United States, and the next generation be an ambassador of the United States.”The Koh family immigrated to the United States in the wake of a military coup in Korea that forced the family to leave that country.
Comment: Congratulations to the Koh family! In this blog I have pointed out that entrepreneurial immigrants have been responsible for a great deal of the industrial innovation and economic growth in this country. The Koh brothers illustrate that immigrants can be comparably important to America's social development. JAD

Harold Koh has been named as a strong candidate for the next Supreme Court opening. He is a former Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights, and his appointment (taken together with the announcement that the U.S. will seek election to the UN Human Rights Council) suggests a major shift in our policy on human rights.
It is also apparently drawing right wing hysteria. Check this article on Slatehttp://www.slate.com/id/2215142/.
Dr. Howard Koh is not only an extremely well trained physician and medical researcher, he is widely admired for the work he did for six years as Commissioner of Public Health in Massachusetts. He has been recognized as a likely appointee by a Democratic administration for the Assistant Secretary for Health for some years.
