'"Coca-Cola' Malaria Drug Scheme Kicks Off With $225 Million"
This posting in Science Blogs describes "the Affordable Medicines Facility for Malaria, (which) was officially launched today in Oslo with a $225 million budget, thanks to donations by the United Kingdom and UNITAID, an international fund filled with taxes on plane tickets." The fund provides subsidies to the firms manufacturing anti-malarial drugs so that the price in Africa will drop from more than $6 per treatment to 20 to 50 cents per treatment. Getting affordable, effective drugs to people is obviously very important!
