This graph is from a good article in Science which introduces a long section on energy technology. The graph shows (the green lines) that both California and the United States saw growth in per capita GDP, but California grew more rapidly than did the rest of the country and in recent years surpassed the rest of the nation in per capita GDP.The graph also shows (the blue lines) that per capita electricity consumption has remained fairly constant in California while it has increased in the rest of the nation. So California has managed rapid economic growth without increasing electricity use during several decades.
Science attributes this success to smart policies in California!
