On February 12th, 1809 two great men were born–Abraham Lincoln, Emancipator of American Slaves and Charles Darwin, founder of the Theory of evolution.
February 12, 2009 will be the 150th Anniversary of the publication of Darwin's famous book On The Origin of Species. The day has been chosen for an International Celebration to show appreciation for Darwin and for his achievements.
Until 1971, both February 12 and February 22 were observed in the United States as federal public holidays to honor the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and George Washington (February 22).
In 1971, the President proclaimed one single federal public holiday, the Presidents' Day, to be observed on the third Monday of February, honoring all past president of the United States of America. This year, the third monday falls on February 20th.
