Congratulate an electronics or electrical engineer on her/his day!
Nikola Tesla, Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison were among the members of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) . Today is the anniversary of the "1884 meeting in Philadelphia when members of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, one of IEEE’s predecessor societies, gathered for the first time to share technical ideas." So October 7th is also the day the 430,000 members of the IEEE celebrate IEEE Day.
Who says your destiny is not written in the stars? (Some will understand.) Everyone, have a good day.

April 23rd was World Book and Copyright Day
From UNESCO:
Cellphones have made books more accessible than ever before in developing nations. In a world where 10% of adults can't read or write, mobile technologies hold the promise to combating the scourge of illiteracy, and thus improving lives everywhere. This is our local celebration, held on Sunday so lots of people can come out to see it. We went last year and had a good time.

World Pneumonia Day
Today is World Pneumonia Day. Pneumonia is one of the most solvable problems in the world, and yet it kills more children under 5 than any other illness in every region of the world.

December 1: World AIDS Day
Today is World AIDS Day, and a good day to think of the end of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The tipping point is when on the average, each infected person infects one other during his/her lifetime. Today the world is above the tipping point, and the epidemic is still propagating the virus. If we can get below the tipping point, we will be on the way to beating the disease. Check out the U.S. Government AIDS website and its coverage of World AIDS Day.

UN urges accelerated efforts in the global fight to eradicate poverty
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon cautioned yesterday that progress so far in the fight against poverty risked being reversed by a failure to put people at the centre of development policies and strategies aimed at economic recovery following the global financial crisis.
"In the name of fiscal austerity, we cannot cut back on common-sense investments in people," Mr. Ban said in a message to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, noting that too many people have been seized by the fear of losing their jobs, their ability to feed their families and access to health care.
