One way to honor those 3000 who died is to honor also the more than 3000 military who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan in the five years since. We should also honor the men and women who are suffering now as a result of their work on Ground Zero.
But let us also remember that more than ten times 3000 people have been killed in Iraq since 9/11, and Iraq is a country less than one-tenth the size of the United States. The grief we feel for our honored dead may help us empathize with the people of Iraq, so many of whom grieve for their own dead.
And while we are at it, let us think of the people of Darfur and other disaster areas. Perhaps an effort to do some good in this world it the best way to honor our own dead.
