For Years, U.S. Has Renewed Amnesty for 312,000 - washingtonpost.com:

"While Congress has struggled rancorously this month over what to do with the country's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, the Bush administration has kept renewing permission for 312,000 Central Americans -- including tens of thousands of people in the District, Maryland and Virginia -- to remain here under 'temporary protected status.'"

Comment: Perhaps we need a system which provides green cards and a route to citizenship to those immigrants who are in the country under "temporary protected status" for more than five years. Someone in this country that long, who is not a criminal, and who has held a job and established roots in teh community, should be given the opportunity to stay and become a U.S. citizen. JAD
