The distribution of Wealth

Warren Buffet and Bill Gates were both estimated to be worth more than $50 billion last year. by Forbes magazine. That is, they each have more than 5 million times the $10,000 net worth shown in the following graph.

The Millennium Development Goals Monitor reports
:
The number of people in developing countries living on less than US $1 a day fell to 980 million in 2004; down from 1.25 billion in 1990.

I think it's exciting to see the likes of Gates (and Buffet turning over his fortunes to the Gates Foundation) getting involved in the international development scene. Hopefully it will become a social norm among the super-rich, we are also seeing it with the founders of ebay, amazon, and google.

I agree, it is great to see these guys weighing in to solve the great problems of mankind.

I guess there is an argument as to whether it is better to tax the rich and have government spend the money, or to let them have tax exemptions for charitable giving.

Of course, the governments are going to be the big donors, but it seems pretty clear that the best of the foundations do a great job -- better than USAID probably. So having complementary donors like Ford and Rockefeller has been very good for the world.

The Gates Foundation has money to put these old players in the shade!
