A Set of Intergovernmental Organizations Americans Don't Know Well

I came across an interesting article by Krishnan Srinivasan in The UN Chronicle. He talks about the development of:

  • The British Commonwealth, built among the nations formed from the British Empire;
  • Organisation de la Francophonie built among France and its former possessions.
  • Communidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP), the Community of Portuguese- speaking countries.
  • Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos (OEI) para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (Organization of Iberian-American States for Education, Science and Culture).
These are important international organizations, but the United States stands apart from all of them.

I'm sure many people in Australia and other Commonwealth countries were like me and scratched their heads wondering what the point of the Commonwealth actually is.

Then I heard (I think it was a comment from someone in the aid industry) that members of the Commonwealth, especially African nations, find the that organization very valuable as they are able to discuss things easily with their counterparts from other nations using the same language. I'd imagine the same would apply to the Portuguese, French and Spanish organizations.

Chris is the co-founder of Appropedia, a great site on technologies for developing nations. Nice to hear from him.

I have been impressed by Commonwealth of Learnin. Z friend and colleague who was on the review panel for Organisation de la Francophonie tells me that it does good work. There is really a great role for the Communidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa since African Portuguese speaking countries have much to learn from and share with Brazil, and few other ways to make the connections. I don't know how well the Community works however.

There are other UNESCO spin-offs in addition to OEI, focusing on cooperation in education, science and culture -- notably the Islamic Educational, Scienctific and Cultural Organization.
