Big Pharma's Political Contributions

According to the Washington Post:
In 2008, for the first time in 18 years, the pharmaceutical industry's donations to Democrats were on par with the money it gave to Republicans.
Comment: Does anyone believe that Big Pharma profits went down because the industry spent more than $100 million on contributions to politicians in the last ten elections? Does anyone believe that the industry's preference for Republicans during the 1996-2006 period was more driven by concern for the health of the American public rather than by a belief that the Republicans would do more for their profits? No I believe that big pharma financed most of the Republican campaigns for the last 8 years and prior -they don't like democrats much, FDA must be overhauled, as FDA hired former Drug Company executives, its a scam, for profit and corruption in the US government, like the drug company Wyeth that hires ghostwriters, and doctors to fake reports, disgusting, immoral, illegal, fraudulent companies.

Others have also said that FDA must be overhauled, but I don't follow the Agency closely enough to have an informed comment.

The recent Chinese food contamination scandal should confirm that we need a strong and active FDA. I have heard that the food inspection service is worse than the pharmaceutical side of the Agency.

I would warn against too facil a condemnation of people who have worked as executives in Big Pharma. I had the privilege of working for Bob DeCaries in the Office of International Health. He was a hero of public health, who had been the field trials director of a pharmaceutical company, before joining government.

Indeed, FDA needs the expertise that former company executives can bring, but needs to temper that with expertise from public health agencies and academia as well.
