Have you heard about Shibuya University?
Shibuya is the entertainment center of Tokyo. Started in 2006, Shibuya University holds courses anywhere in the district -- stores, malls, temples, anywhere. There is little distinction between faculty and students, and anyone can teach a course. Students sign up for courses on the University website. There are no degrees or certificates, nor enrollment requirements. While most students are young adults, it is hoped that eventually people of all ages will participate in its continuing education. Students don't pay for classes, but do pay for materials if they make something. The University, which needs little money to run, gets a small subsidy from a local council company that supports service companies in Shibuya and contributions from local businesses.
