We need more DARPAs and less bureaucratic research organizations
Henry Petroski, who has written some nice books on engineering issues, has published a review in the WP of The Department of Mad Scientists': How DARPA Is Remaking Our World, from the Internet to Artificial Limbs by Michael Belfiore. DARPA is the least bureaucratic of U.S. Government agencies funding engineering research and development of new technologies, and is also one of the most successful having pioneered the Internet and GPS technologies among others. Lets hope that the ARPA-E for energy technology, developed by the Department of Energy on the model of DARPA, will be comparably successful.
