Source: "Very Conservative Americans: Leaders Should Stick to Beliefs: Other groups of Americans tilt more toward compromise," by Frank Newport, January 12, 2011
If you think that government has an important role in defense, promotion of economic growth, law enforcement, protection of the public health and other fields, then you should agree that it is more important that political leaders compromise to get things done rather than that they stick to their beliefs.
On the other hand, the question seems to me to create a false dichotomy. Certainly there are many areas in which most political leaders should be able to reach compromises that don't violate important beliefs of either party.
