Little known Black facts



Alessandro de Medici, ruler of Florence from 1530 until 1537. was the son of Simonetta da Collevecchio who is believed to have been Black. He was known as "il Moro" (the Moor).

General Dumas

Alexandre Dumas, père, the author of The Three Musketeers, was the son of  General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas whose mother was Marie-Cessette Dumas, a slave who was of Afro-Caribbean ancestry. His son, Alexandre Dumas, fils was the author of Camille.


Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, the Russian author, was the great grandson of  Abram Gannibal (also known as Hannibal),  who was an African brought to Russia as a gift for Peter the Great. He became major-general, military engineer, governor of Reval and nobleman of the Russian Empire.
